Internship opportunities at The Internet Public Library

November 3rd, 2009

Digital reference service

This internship includes some or all of the duties surrounding the daily operation of the question-answering service. The Ask an IPL Librarian service works with LIS students from many colleges/universities.  LIS students learn valuable reference skills while working with its international community. Similar to a physical library’s reference service, the IPL utilizes “on-duty” shifts to handle the incoming questions in a timely manner consistent with its high standard of customer service. The IPL Digital Reference Service Intern involved with the reference area will assist the IPL Administrative Team in working with students and faculty who are involved with the program.

Collection development and maintenance

The IPL’s tens of thousands of materials require review, periodic re-evaluation, and link-checking. Some of these materials are organized into special collections, pathfinders (research guides), and FAQs (frequently asked questions), but most reside in the IPL’s Subject Collections (http://www.ipl.org/div/subject). This intern will work under the guidance of the Manager of Digital Collections to develop, organize and maintain the IPL’s collections in cooperation with LIS students’ projects through their college/university’s coursework. The internship will instruct in finding, evaluating, and describing/cataloging free and authoritative online resources.

Both of these internships are offered for credit or for experience.  Please indicate in your cover letter if you are applying for the internship for credit or for experience.
Interested students should send a resume and cover letter to:

Alison Miller, Researcher in Distance Education, at milleru65@gmail.com
(Digital Reference Service Internship)

Michael Galloway, Manager, Digital Collections, at mike.galloway@drexel.edu
(Collection Development and Maintenance Internship)
Include in your cover letter any coursework that you have taken or plan to take that involves the IPL.
Deadline for submission is November 23, 2009.
