I-CELTIC announces student awards

The Interdisciplinary Center for Leadership, Technology Integration, and Critical Literacies (I-CELTIC) has announced the winners of two doctoral research grants and a summer doctoral research fellowship. Each grant of up to $500 is awarded to support a doctoral student’s research; the fellowship helps support a doctoral student whose research is compatible with the I-CELTIC vision and mission.

“We are proud to announce that Annette Goldsmith (College of Information) and JeongMin Lee (College of Education) are our grant winners” said Dr. Eliza T. Dresang, founding director of I-CELTIC, ” and that Kyungwon Koh (College of Information) is our fellowship awardee. It is a pleasure to have students of their caliber working with us on research that we expect to make a positive difference in learning outcomes.

I-CELTIC is a joint effort of the FSU College of Information, College of Education, and the Learning Systems Institute. It is funded by a five-year grant from the FSU Office of Research, supplemented by the College of Information. A mini-symposium and reception celebrating I-CELTIC’s launch is scheduled for June 19 from 2- 5 p.m. at the FSU Research Foundation, Building A, in Tallahassee. Interested parties are invited to attend.

Drs. Burnett and Kazmer to edit JELIS

Dr. Kathy Burnett and Dr. Michelle Kazmer of the FSU College of Information have been appointed to be co-editors of the Journal of Education for Library and Information Science (JELIS). JELIS is the official publication of the Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE), whose board of directors posted the announcement on May 9.

JELIS is the fourth scholarly journal now being edited at the FSU College of Informationjoining The Library Quarterly, Government Information Quarterly, and the Digital Heritage section of Museum Management and Curatorship. JELIS serves as a forum for discussion and presentation of research and issues within the field of library and information science education.

Student wins grant with class assignment

Specialist student Melissa Johnson in the Project LEAD program has received a $1,500 grant award based on a project she developed in Dr. Christie Koontzs Marketing of Library and Information Services class. Melissa, a media specialist in Forsyth County Georgia and former Georgia Teacher of the Year, won a Bright Ideas Grant from the Sawnee EMC, a local utility provider.

FSU-CI research rated #2 in Top 25 Hottest Articles

Library & Information Science Research, a cross-disciplinary refereed journal focusing on research in library and information science, listed an article by FSU College of Information faculty members Melissa Gross and Don Latham as second hottest in its list of “Top 25 Hottest Articles.” Their article, “Attaining information literacy: An investigation of the relationship between skill level, self-estimates of skill, and library anxiety,” received the second highest number of downloads during the most recent October-December 2007 issue. FSU-CI faculty are recognized as prolific researchers. A 2006 paper appearing in Library and Information Science Research (Adkins and Budd) ranked our faculty third among all LIS programs for most journal publications, and sixth for most journal publications per faculty member. Professors Charles R. McClure and John Carlo Bertot were noted as the most productive LIS faculty team in journal publication during the period between 1999 and 2004.
