Assistant Professor Lisa M. Tripp of The Florida State University College of Information was a research collaborator on the most extensive U.S. study of teens and their use of digital media, recently released by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. The three-year study showed that Americas youth are developing important social and technical skills online often in ways adults do not understand or value.

Kids’ Informal Learning with Digital Media: An Ethnographic Investigation of Innovative Knowledge Cultures” incorporates interviews of 800 youth and young adults and over 5000 hours of online observations. Dr. Tripp was among the 28 researchers involved in the study, part of a $50 million project on digital and media learning funded by the MacArthur Foundation, and is a co-author of the full report which will be published as a book with MIT Press next fall; a draft is currently available online.
