Florida Library Association Scholarships (3 grad, 2 undergrad) Feb 2010 deadline

The Florida Library Association (FLA) Scholarship Committee is pleased to announce that the application process has begun for the 2010 scholarships, which will be awarded at the 2010 Annual Conference.

Three graduate school scholarships are available: one at Florida State University, one at the University of South Florida and a third, the Minority scholarship, which may be awarded at either school. To qualify for a Minority Scholarship, the candidate must belong to one of the following ethnic groups: Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, Asian/Pacific Islander, or American Indian/Alaska Native.

Additional scholarships are available for undergraduates. One for a student pursuing an associate’s degree and one for a student pursuing a bachelor’s degree.

The scholarships are available from a dedicated fund and have been given since 1995. This fund is replenished through donations and fundraising activities. The primary fundraising activity is the Silent Auction held at the FLA Annual Conference.

Eligibility Requirements
-Applicant must be a resident of Florida and have some experience in a Florida library;
-Be an FLA member in good standing -Be admitted to an accredited program at a Florida college or university or to a library/information graduate degree program at FSU or USF;
-Commit to working in a Florida library for a minimum of one year after graduation or award of scholarship

Fish-fry to benefit Comm Disorders clinic

Scottish Rite is sponsoring a fish fry from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, to benefit the L.L. Schendel Speech and Hearing Clinic operated by FSU’s School of Communication Science & Disorders.

Proceeds will be used for clinic scholarships, which cover fees for children’s therapy as well as tuition at Communication Camp in the summer.

The fish fry will be held at the Odd Fellows Lodge, 5500 N. Monroe St., across from Lake Jackson. The lodge is just south of Capital Circle Northwest.

Applications for 2009-10 Sunshine State Library Leadership Institute

The primary goal of the Sunshine Staten Leadership Institute is to assist in preparing library leaders to provide the highest quality library services to the citizens of Florida in the most effective and innovative manner that will meet today’s needs and tomorrow’s challenges.

The Leadership Institute is open to individuals from all types of libraries (public, academic, school, and special). It is designed for professional librarians, as well as those in management positions without a master’s degree in Library Science. Candidates should have a minimum of two years professional library experience and a demonstrated successful professional work experience.

The location for the 2009-10 Leadership Institute will be the Central Brevard Public Library, 308 Forrest Avenue, Cocoa, FL. 32922.

The deadline for applications is Friday, June 26, 2009.

2008 Zipf Fellowship

The Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) is soliciting applications for the 2009 A.R. Zipf Fellowship in Information Management.

The fellowship is awarded annually to a student currently enrolled in the early stages of graduate school who shows exceptional promise for leadership and technical achievement in Information Management.

The amount of the award is $10,000.

Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States.

Application deadline: April 6, 2009.

ALA recognizes FSU-CI diversity effort

The Florida State University College of Information was recognized by the American Library Association in a press release issued last week entitled, Florida State University supports ALAs diversity efforts in the library profession.
